Ring the Changes: Change Children's Lives

September to December 2006

The Central Council Public Relations Committee has been working with The Children's Society to launch a promotion of sponsored ringing to celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Children's Society. Building on the success of the sponsored 'Peal Appeal' ringing in 1999 the PR Committee asks for support from ringers around the world to raise money for this worthwhile cause.

Richard Offen (who has volunteered time without a fee to work as a Consultant to the PR Committee and who masterminded the link with SeaBritain 2005 for promoting ringing for Trafalgar 200) will set out the arrangements in the Ringing World over the next few weeks.

In the meantime please reserve the period between September and December 2006 for sponsored ringing for The Children's Society. In particular please consider ways young ringers can take part: young people who can help disadvantaged youngsters.

The Children's Society has been working to support the needs of vulnerable children for 125 years. In 1881 Edward Rudolf founded the Church of England Waifs and Strays Society after two children, who attended his Sunday school, were found begging for food on the street. He learned that their father had died and left their mother struggling to support seven children under the age of 11.

The Children's Society began life as a pioneering organisation, willing to deal with the children no one else wanted to help, those whose needs were greatest and most overlooked.

Since 1881 the charity has evolved in name - from the Waifs and Strays to The Children's Society - and in size. They now work throughout England carrying on Edward Rudolf's legacy, holding fast to the values of compassion and unconditional support for fellow human beings.

The aim of this ringing project is to achieve not just sponsorship for The Children's Society but also local promotion of ringing and especially attracting youngsters to learn to ring. Please ensure that all sponsored ringing is publicised well in advance in parish magazines, local newspapers and local radio and that general information is also given about where to go to see ringing and learn how to ring. In particular give the Central Council website address www.cccbr.org.uk on all publicity material because there is a link on that to the Central Council 'Learn to Ring' initiative - where a personal response about a local contact is given by Bobbie May on behalf of the Public Relations Committee. A copy of the Central Council publicity leaflet will be included in the publicity pack sent out to parishes by The Children's Society.

A joint press release is downloadable as a Microsoft Word document from the Central Council website and from The Children's Society website www.childrenssociety.org.uk It will also appear in The Ringing World. This is designed to be edited by filling in details of local ringing arrangements, then printed and sent it to the local media together with information about local participation.

Please look out in The Ringing World for more details about applying for a sponsorship pack during the next few weeks and encourage YOUR PCC to be active in supporting ringers with this project.
