BELLS RING OUT TO CELEBRATE 125 YEARS OF PIONEERING WORK WITH CHILDREN

Bells all over the world will be ringing out this autumn to celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Children's Society.

The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers and The Children's Society are jointly promoting sponsored bell ringing to celebrate this special anniversary and are inviting bell ringers around the world to participate in sponsored ringing.

At .............(insert name of Church) sponsored ringing will take place ................(insert details of the sponsored ringing including date and time). For further information contact: .......... (insert name and phone number of person to contact for arranging time to see ringing and find out more about it).

"The money raised will help The Children's Society's work with and for children to help them deal with life's harshest challenges and face the future with confidence." Explained the charity's fundraising and campaigns director, Martin Field.

The Children's Society was founded 125 years ago through the vision of Edward Rudolf a Sunday school teacher. He was determined to help children for whom there was no other provision. Over the years the work of The Children's Society has adapted to changes in society and it now works to help children whose needs are overlooked, neglected or ignored.

Judith Rogers of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers says, "Sponsored bell ringing to raise money for The Children's Society was very successful in 1999, and we hope that even greater success will be achieved by this 125th anniversary project."

Sponsored teams will set out to ring for a given length of time and can be sponsored either for the number of 'changes' they ring or for the number of minutes continuous ringing they produce.

"We are keen to encourage as many young bellringers to take part as possible and hope that they will encourage their friends to support them.

"Last year over 800 bell towers world-wide took part in special ringing. We hope ringers everywhere will rise to the occasion and not only make this a very special year for The Children's Society, but also use it to stimulate new interest in ringing in their own towns and villages." Said Judith.

If you'd like to take part please contact The Children's Society on 0845 300 1128 or email

Notes to editors:

Change Ringing around the world - Over 5,000 towers in the United Kingdom and about 150 in countries which have a strong historical association with Britain contain rings of five or more bells hung for change ringing. Change ringing originated in the sixteenth century when church bells began to be rung with a rope and full wheel to give control of the bell. This allows sets of bells (rings) to be rung in a continuously changing pattern ('ringing the changes'). Today there are more than 40,000 ringers in the UK, and smaller numbers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Southern Africa and the USA. They share a fascinating hobby and a commitment to their bell ringing teams.
