Running the DVD
Insert the disk into your computer's DVD-ROM drive. Wait a few seconds and the publication should start automatically.
If the publication does not start automatically, go to "My Computer" and double-click on the DVD icon which is labelled "Bell News", then click on the icon called "Bell News.exe".
Installation
No software installation is required in order to use the DVD.
However, the first time you use the DVD there will be some data files which are copied to the hard disk of your computer (approx. 20 MB). These files contain the data which is used by the MySQL database for generating the Table of Contents, Index and page links. No images are copied and no software is copied or installed.
The files are copied to your PC so that the publication performs more quickly. This is done once and there is no need to remove the data afterwards, unless you intend never to use the DVD again.
For anyone wishing to remove the data, it resides in a "Temp" folder on your C drive. For example, if I am logged in as the user "Michael", the data will be located at:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\TEMP\dweb\bellnews"
and
"...\TEMP\dweb\mysql"
or:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temp\1\bellnews"
and
"...\Temp\1\dweb\mysql"
Ensure that your folder settings enable you to view hidden files and folders.
The folders "bellnews" and "mysql" contains MySQL table files called "bn_crossrefs.frm", "bn_index.myi", etc. Both folders can be removed safely by deletion.
Instructions for using the Bell News DVD on Linux (with thanks to )
Make sure that apache2, libapache2-mod-php5, mysql-server and php5-mysql packages are installed.
Copy the code/engine/mysql/data/bellnews directory on the DVD into the /var/lib/mysql directory and make sure the directory and its contents are owned by the MySQL user.
As root, run MySQL and run:
GRANT ALL ON bellnews.* TO public IDENTIFIED BY 'public';
Make sure userdir and php5 support are included in apache's mods-enabled. Edit apache's php5.conf to enable php in userdirs, and change SymLinksIfOwnerMatch to FollowSymLinks.
(The latter is not necessary if you intend to copy the images on to your computer hard drive.) Restart apache.
Create a directory called ~/public_html/bellnews, and copy the /media/cdrom/code/www/code directory into it. Make sure it is all owned by you.
Symlink or copy the /media/cdrom/code/www/images directory into your ~/public_html/bellnews directory. Copying it makes it run faster at the expense of 4GB of disk space.
Copy the code/frame_tr.htm file to index.html, and edit the reference to 'frame.php' to read 'code/frame.php'.

The following information is intended to resolve browser security issues which might arise when the publication is run for the first time

Windows Security Alert
If you are informed that a program called "mysqld" with an "Unknown" publisher wishes to make a connection to the internet, you must choose to "Unblock" this program. The program "mysqld" is a vital part of the CD-ROM. Contrary to the Windows warning, "mysqld" does not require an internet connection and it does not make use of the internet even if a connection is present.
Nothing happens when I click on the cover
If you are unable to open this publication using Microsoft Internet Explorer but your web browser displays a yellow bar across the top of the window then you need to "allow pop-ups".
You can do this as follows:
MySQL and PHP errors
If you are presented with a screen full of errors relating to MySQL and PHP, it is likely that you have another MySQL service running on your computer which is interfering with the CD-ROM. You must turn this service off before running the CD-ROM.
